Your life is precious, boo. And racism and white supremacy take too much from us.
Racism often feels like a deeply embedded, immovable force. It’s woven into systems, identities, and everyday interactions. But while its effects may seem overwhelming, we have the power to unlearn what we’ve internalized and take steps toward meaningful change. That’s where UnRacist Yourself comes in—helping you take real, actionable steps to dismantle racism, starting within yourself.
Who Am I and Why Am I Here?
Hi, I’m Dr. Alissa Gardenhire. I have to admit, that talking, writing, and speaking about racism is one of the last things I want to do. Racism is BORING! Yet, I know that unless we go through the work of dismantling racism within ourselves, the problems it causes will persist, as they have done for so many centuries.
Through my work as a social policy researcher, educator, speaker, and author, I’ve spent years exploring the impact of social issues on individuals and communities. One thing I’ve learned is that racism and white supremacy affect us all—but differently. To one degree or another, everyone is harmed by it. Whether it seems as though you’re benefiting from it or are directly harmed by it, the system distorts our relationships with ourselves and each other. It is inefficient. It is costly. It hurts and distorts. It has got to go.
My goal here is to offer tools that help you unlearn these harmful dynamics.
What Can You Expect?
In this newsletter, I’ll be sharing practical tools, reflections, and exercises designed to:
Help you recognize how racism affects your life and behavior.
Provide steps to UnRacist Yourself by dismantling the internalized beliefs that contribute to white supremacy.
Empower you to engage others in meaningful conversations and actions that lead to real change.
Each week, I’ll share new insights, guides, and resources to keep you grounded and moving forward in this important work.
Why Now?
Because racism is boring—and, more importantly, it’s holding us all back. White supremacy and the racism it supports keep us from realizing our full potential, as individuals and as a society. Now is the time to start the work of unlearning and rebuilding something better.
